Hawatmeh, of Oneonta, had 5,502 votes to Millbrook resident Van De Water's 5,027, according to the state Board of Elections. Those numbers reflected all ballots cast at polling places on Tuesday and during the early voting period, but not mailed ballots, which could be postmarked as late as Tuesday and will be accepted through June 30.
The number of paper ballots sent to voters for the primary was unusually high because of the COVID-19 pandemic, making it difficult to call most races across the state after polls closed Tuesday.
The winner of the Republican primary in the 19...h Congressional District will face first-term U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado, D-Rhinebeck, in the November election.
The 19th District comprises all of Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Sullivan, Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego counties; most of Dutchess County; parts of Rensselaer and Montgomery counties; and a small section of Broome County.
