Mohonk Preserve bans nudity in popular clothes-free area

The preserve said in a letter to members that the decision was made in conjunction with Mohonk's Land Stewardship Committee and coincides with the reopening of the nearby Coxing Trailhead.

"For many years, the land below the Split Rock wading area was used as a place where naturists congregated, although nudity and nude hiking/sunbathing were never sanctioned recreational uses at Mohonk Preserve," the letter states.

The preserve has accommodated the naturists over the years — even posting signs alerting hikers that they "may encounter nudity beyond this point” — but t...e letter to members said, "Some visitors persistently engaged in inappropriate public behavior in an area just yards away from where families and other visitors were enjoying the trail and Split Rock wading area."
