Thousands of absentee ballots remain to be counted in the coming days but Brouk led Missick by about 5,000 votes based on early-voting and Election Day balloting. She garnered 52% of the votes to his 48%.
Missick decisively won ballot...ng in Ontario County, where he lives. But Brouk took Monroe, her home county, where the number of voters is much larger.
If the result holds, Brouk would become the first Black woman to represent the Rochester area in the state Senate.
Brouk, 34, who was born in Rochester and grew up there and in Pittsford, has worked for several public-interest non-profit organizations in business development and fundraising. She lives in the city.
She has said she would work for better health care for New Yorkers, equity in funding for public schools and programs that would help working people and small businesses recover from the pandemic.
Missick, 39 and a resident of Victor, is winemaker and co-owner of Villa Bellangelo winery on the western shore of Seneca Lake. He also is a lawyer and an Army veteran.
He had said his emphasis in the Senate would be improving New York's business climate and creating jobs. He has urged creation of a state infrastructure bank and urban and rural empowerment zones.
The 55th Senate District includes part of the city of Rochester, most eastern Monroe County suburbs and towns in western Ontario County. The seat has been held by Rich Funke, a Republican, since 2014. He did not seek re-election.
Most of the district's voters lived in Monroe County, and they tend heavily Democratic, with 29,000 more enrolled Democrats than Republicans.
