Poughkeepsie man gets up to 15 years in prison for Newburgh shooting death

Steven Williams, 29, was sentenced Monday in Orange County Court to 7½ to 15 years in state prison for manslaughter and a concurrent sentence of 12 for criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, Hoovler's office said.

The charges followed the Jan. 25 death of Jermaine Cooper, 40, in Newburgh, which was followed by a high-speed police chase to Poughkeepsie.

Williams pleaded guilty in Ora...ge County Court on April 30. Two co-defendants from Poughkeepsie also pleaded guilty that day: Donnell Johnson, 24, to reckless endangerment, a felony; and Tysheed McPhee, 23, to attempted tampering with physical evidence, also a felony.

Williams pleaded guilty In his plea, Williams admitted he was in a car with three other men that was being driven in the vicinity of Hasbrouck and Williams streets in Newburgh the night of Jan. 25 when he fired a gun toward a sidewalk. One of the shots struck and killed Cooper.
