In the Garden: How to clean your houseplants

A woman cutting old leaves with scissors. Trimming. Many of our homes are on the dry side. Many plants react by forming brown leaf tips. You can trim off brown leaf tips on plants such as corn plants, palms, and spider plants. You can increase humidity in your home by using humidifiers or placing containers on a tray with pebbles and water.

Pruning. Many house...lants can benefit from a little spring pruning. Cut back leggy branches on houseplants such as ornamental fig and umbrella plants. You can even shorten a plant by cutting it back by one third.

Ferns. If you brought Boston ferns indoors for the winter, now's a good time to carefully turn them upside down and give them a good shaking, then trim dead stems underneath. They will repay you with new growth.

Fertilize. Give your houseplants a dose of water-soluble, general-purpose fertilizer to jumpstart them for spring.

A little tender loving care now will make your houseplants thrive — and give you a gardening fix while you hunker down indoors.
